Song: “My Island Home”
Performer: Christine Anu
Album: Australia’s Greatest Songs
“This song is about my native homeland, Australia. At this time, living on the other side of the world with travel restrictions in place, I’ve never felt further away from my family. This song gives me comfort, and in a funny way, it reminds me that no matter how far I am from my native island home, I have found a family on this island of Manhattan with my New York Pops family!”
Song: “What More Do I Need?” from Saturday Night (Stephen Sondheim)
Performer: Liz Callaway
Album: The Essential Liz Callaway
“I love this song – it says everything I want to about this crazy, wonderful metropolis! As a side note, when I’m not running our PopsEd programs, I hit the cabaret stage and this song has been in my repertoire for years. I love nothing more than belting it out in my apartment. I also love Liz Callaway and attended the performance during which she recorded this live.”
Song: “Manhattan”
Performer: Ella Fitzgerald
Album: Ella Fitzgerald Sings The Rodgers and Hart Songbook
“I’m realizing my playlist has a bit of a New York theme going on! This song just makes me happy, and who doesn’t love a bit of Ella in the morning?”
Piece: "Enigma Variations: Variation IX. Nimrod - Adagio" (Edward Elgar)
Performer: London Symphony Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult
Album: Elgar: Enigma Variations & Pomp & Circumstance Marches Nos 1-5
“This piece is one of my favorite pieces of all time – I always feel at peace listening to it. Though it is often played at memorials and solemn occasions, when I hear it, it fills me with a sense of hope. Which is something we all need right now.”
Song: Offshore
Performer: Muttering Oaks
Album: Dirt Hugs
“One of the friends I’ve made since moving to New York is an indie singer-songwriter and this is one of his tunes. I love the sound of the mandolin, and this song features a lot of it!”
