On Saturdays throughout the school year, New York
Pops instructors provide free music lessons to students
in each of New York City’s five boroughs. The
lessons are offered as part of the Department of Education’s
borough-wide band and orchestra program, a voluntary
after-school program for students who wish to study
music but whose schools have limited resources. Salute
to Music offers these young musicians the opportunity
to learn and perform in an interactive group setting.
Professional instructors provide lessons in all the
major instrument groups, including strings, woodwinds,
brass and percussion. At the end of the year, more than
two dozen select Salute to Music students perform on
the Carnegie Hall stage with The New York Pops at the
orchestra’s gala concert.

“My experience as part of The New York Pops
Salute to Music has been awesome, challenging, and amazing.
I really appreciated the individual attention received
in a small group setting because it enabled me to take
full advantage of the lessons given to me by a professional
clarinet musician.”
Brie Clarke, Salute to Music Student 2005-2006
“This is an inspiration for my son and thrilling
for me.”

“The New York Pops provides a unique and
much-needed contribution to the music education of New
York City public schoolchildren in a time when funding
for arts education is scarce.”
Joe Zoltowski Salute to Music Program Coordinator
for Manhattan
“I want to thank you for giving me this incredible
opportunity. …I intend to keep music in my life
as I grow older whether I play in a professional orchestra
or just keep it as an enjoyable hobby.”

In the spring of 2006, Joanne Winograd
received her Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College with
a major in Economics. Her interest in music began early
as she started piano lessons as the age of 3 and later
began studying trumpet and voice. In college, while
teaching French classes to fellow students, she nourished
her passion for education. In July of 2006 Joanne joined
The New York Pops family as the Education and Office
Coordinator where she continues to enjoy her work with
music and education.
This program is supported, in part, by the UJA-Federation of New York’s Music for Youth.
